William “Bill” Tiner, a true gentleman and longtime resident of Santa Fe passed away on Friday, April 19, 2024, peacefully, in his home, surrounded by his two favorite buddies; his dog Kobe and Venus, the daughter he always wanted. Born on August 6, 1942 in Sharp County, Hardy, Arkansas to Ruth McCance and WIlliam Tiner, Sr., he was also known by his family and friends as “Wid.” After Bill was diagnosed with Dementia his health started to decline for the past few years. Wid was a handsome, hard working young man, resembling a young James Dean; very athletic, making all district in basketball and loved playing baseball at Melbourne High School. He graduated at the young age of 16 on May 27, 1959. Wid was well known for his storytelling including how he grew up “dirt poor” and lived in a house with dirt floors, no running water or city utilities. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Pat and Kenneth, and daughter-in law, Colette M. Tiner. Bill was also preceded in death by his lovely wife, Sharon Kay Passmore, she was a beautiful young woman with coal black hair, elected homecoming queen and played basketball as a senior at Calico Rock High School. Bill and Sharon had met before at high school sporting events because their schools were known to be county rivals and after Bill began courting Sharon they married shortly after she graduated high school. After graduation, they moved to Roswell, NM and he began working at Glover’s Packing House and became a butcher. On May 19, 1962, their only son Terry was born. Shortly after, they moved and settled in Santa Fe at which time Bill was hired as an inspector and compliance officer for the State of New Mexico Livestock Board. While Bill was traveling throughout the State of New Mexico as an inspector and compliance officer, Sharon became a bookkeeper for Alpha Beta Skaggs. Bill’s love for sports began his coaching career as he mentored many of our young men in Santa Fe while coaching local Babe Ruth teams. He was awarded Coach of The Year in 1977-78 and instilled the very same coaching skills and athletic abilities to Terry and Cal. Wid and Sharon were so proud of Terry and Cal and often bragged about how well Cal was doing in school and sports in Colorado. They would often host family nights with Sharon’s famous enchiladas and “to die for” Banana Pudding and would play Rook (always guys vs gals) late into the night, there were a lot of close games and just as many blowouts! In 1999, Bill retired from the State of New Mexico Livestock Board and began working security and compliance regulation at Camel Rock and Tesuque Casinos and retired in 2018. Bill is survived by his son Terry (Venus), Cal Michael, grandson; Benny Passmore (Patty); Shannon Passmore (Sarah), Adeline and Graham; Brandon Passmore (Becky), Landon and Kaylee and many other relatives and loved ones.
“Wid was a kind, genuine, straightforward and honest person. Sharon was these things as well, but she could also be tough and at times a little salty. That’s what we loved about the both of them and we’ll miss them greatly. On the bright side, we have these memories and stories from our time with them that we hold dearly and can share with others.” ~Shannon Passmore and Family
“Sharon and Terry liked to trout fish with Dad and I on the White River. She was an excellent cook sharing her enchiladas with our families through the years, a favorite of our father Ben. My sister and brother-in-law were both great individuals and I truly miss and loved both of them. We don't know how each of us will go out from this world; but Sharon and Wid’s last couple of years were very difficult. They will be loved and remembered always by their friends and family.”
