Virginia V. Romero
August 15, 1935 – April 15, 2025
Virginia V. Romero, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on August 15, 1935, in Taos, New Mexico, to Virginia and Juan Andres Vargas, she lived a life of love, resilience, and deep devotion to family, faith, and community. On June 15, 1957, she married the love of her life, Gaby Romero, in her hometown of Taos. Together, they built a beautiful life and family rooted in kindness, love, laughter, and enduring values.
Virginia was a woman of quiet strength, wisdom, and grace. She dedicated much of her professional life to serving the educational community of New Mexico. She worked for the New Mexico Department of Education, New Mexico School Boards Association, and eventually retired from the Educational Retirement Board. Through her years of service, she touched countless lives and always carried herself with dignity, professionalism, and compassion.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia and Juan Andres Vargas; her sisters, Irene Vargas and Liz Holloway; and her brother, Phillip Vargas.
Virginia is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 68 years, Gaby Romero; her children and their spouses: Roberta and Grant Kitting, Valerie Romero-Leggott and John Leggott, Leslie and Eddie Kilmer, Gabe and Kristy Romero, and Phyllis Romero and Craig Tadlock. She is also survived by her siblings, Alice Vargas, Andres Vargas, and Frances Vargas.
In addition to her children, Virginia leaves behind a legacy of love and joy through her 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride. She is also deeply cherished by numerous nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends who will remember her with affection and gratitude.
Virginia’s life was a testament to kindness, dedication, integrity, community, and family. She touched countless lives and will be dearly missed. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Services to honor Virginia's life will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025 from 2-4pm at Rivera Family Funeral Home, 417 Rodeo Rd Santa Fe, NM.
