Tommy May, a proud friend, iron worker, and iconic local of Rio Arriba, passed away unexpectedly on September 7th, 2025, in his hometown of Espanola. Tommy’s vibrant personality was complemented by his infectious sense of humor and his mischievous gaze. Whether it be his aunts from Canjilon or wide array of friends, he always had a punch line ready to lighten the mood and bring laughter to those around him.
Those who know Tommy would understand his association with the phrase “a cat with 9 lives.” His remarkable resilience had been on display time and time again as he did his utmost to bounce back from hardships with grit and determination. Not only was he a hard worker, but he had also compassion for others, especially those experiencing hardship, and his willingness to lend a helping hand was well known among friends and family alike.
Tommy’s work both high and low enabled him to become well-renowned throughout Northern New Mexico. He dedicated 25 years toward perfecting his craft in ironwork as well as welding as he displayed his attention to detail on projects ranging from fences to large-scale commercial structures. Furthermore, his affiliation with the Local Ironworker’s Union highlighted his commitment to his profession and pride in contributing his talents to improving his local community.
Beyond his career, Tommy was known for his artistic talents. He found joy and comfort using his imagination and dreams to influence his sketching and creative projects as he displayed this ability with the pen as well as with a welding unit. This effort also extended beyond the canvas as he would often take a personal desire to clean up the community around him.
Tommy is survived by his mother, Christine May, his brother, Carlos May, and his children, Jared May, Garrett May, and Unica May. He also leaves behind loving aunts—Mary, Marcella, Sally, Julia, Donna, and Rebecca, as well as several steadfast friends that meant the world to him. He is preceded in death by his father, Donald R. May, and his grandmother, Flora Garcia.
In honor of Tommy, a Celebration of Life will take place at 3:00pm Friday September 12, 2025, at Rivera Family Funeral Home in Espanola. Tommy Walter May will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and artistic endeavors, but also for his generous spirit, fortitude, and laughter that touched many lives. His legacy will continue on in those who had been fortunate to experience the man he was in his heart.
