Steven Lewis Rosenthal

June 1, 1948 — August 16, 2025

Steven Lewis Rosenthal has passed away peacefully at age 77 surrounded by family at his home in Santa Fe on Saturday, 16 August. He is survived by his wife Jeanne Scripps, daughter Suzanne LaFlamme and her husband Jeff, granddaughter Annelise LaFlamme, and brother Alan Rosenthal and his wife Sue. Although Steven was born and raised in Bronx, New York, he called Santa Fe his home for over 20 years. He attended the Bronx High School of Science as a gifted math student. He then attended Stonybrook University in Long Island, New York, where he was a disc jockey for the school radio. He then attended Brooklyn Law School where he learned his law degree. After practicing law in Brooklyn as a tenant / landlord attorney for several years, he decided to take a teaching position in the New York City school system. He was eventually promoted to Director of Science and Math for District 8 in the Bronx. While there, he facilitated an innovative partnership with Apple where all his students received laptop computers to beta test new models and software for the company. When Steven became a grandfather he was forever-after referred to as “Zayda”. He retired to New Mexico with Jeanne to be closer to their daughter and granddaughter. He sat on the board of the Library of Eldorado where he started a afterschool chess club for local students. His hobbies included baking, Tai Chi, math, travel, comic books, science fiction, and music. He was a hippie at heart, often wearing tie-dye T-shirts and his beloved baseball caps, with sayings on them such as “Thinking Cap” or the symbol for “Pi”. You were loved Zayda and you will be greatly missed. RIP.”
