Silviano (Silver) Ortega, a beloved member of the Santa Fe community, passed away peacefully with his loved ones by his side on September 22, 2025, shortly after the passing of his beloved wife, Nellie Ortega. He was born on April 17, 1949, and throughout his life, he was known for his outgoing, loveable, and caring nature, always present for those in need.
A proud veteran, Silviano served honorably in the army. He dedicated his professional life to the City of Santa Fe and also contributed as part-time gate security at Casas De San Juan. Silviano’s commitment to service and community was evident in both his career and personal life. His years attending college at Highlands University enriched his understanding and passion for life, which he shared with everyone around him.
Silviano enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests that brought immense joy to his life. He was passionate about coaching sports and instilling a sense of teamwork and discipline in youth. Fishing was a beloved pastime, and he found great pleasure in rooting for his favorite teams, which included the Oklahoma Sooners, Dallas Cowboys, and the New York Yankees. He cherished moments spent smoking his J's, reflecting on life's simple pleasures.
Above all, Silviano's proudest accomplishments were his family and grandchildren, who were the center of his universe. He found great fulfillment in spending time with his family and his dog, Smokey, underscoring his love for companionship and loyalty.
Silviano will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Reymundo Ortega (Tiffany), Daniel Ortega, and his close grandson, Silviano Ortega Jr (Alicia). He is also survived by his brothers, Lorenzo Ortega, Ricardo Ortega (Geri) , Antonio Ortega, 5 stepchildren, 17 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his cherished wife, Nellie Ortega, his father Reymundo Ortega, his mother Eriena Griego, his sisters Mary Ann Lucero, Polly Lucero, Feliz Garcia and his brothers Tito Ortega and Fred Ortega Sr.
The legacy Silviano leaves behind is one of love, compassion, and unwavering support for his family and friends, qualities that will resonate through their lives forever. He will be missed dearly by all who had the privilege to know him.
A Rosary will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 10:30 A.M., followed by Mass at 11:00 A.M., both taking place at Cristo Rey Church, located at 1107 Cristo Rey St. Santa Fe, NM 87501. Burial will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 12:30 P.M.
