Sammy O. Varela was born to Frank Varela and Maria Varela on August 28th 1945. He was a lifelong resident of Pecos NM.
Sammy was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Maria, brothers Ralph, Rudy wife Jane and sister in law Connie. Sammy is survived by brother Frank and wife Vangie, Roy and wife Lucy, brother Albert, sister JoAnn and husband Felipe, sister-in-law Teresa Varela many nephews, nieces, and his faithful companion, Monty.
Sammy suffered many painful months before surrendering and finding eternal rest on September 5th, 2026. Sammy fought a courageous battle against an unbeatable foe, cancer. Sammy experienced several near-death experiences having survived several illnesses and many surgeries. He had surgical scars from head to toe.
Sammy was a retiree of Local Union #16 and a Union Member for over 60 years. Sammy and his brother Ralph worked in every corner of New Mexico including many years in Albuquerque. Union Jobs were limited, thus requiring working in the worksites that employed only Union Members.
Sammy was known as a hardworking, generous man. He enjoyed going to cattle auctions and raising steers for resale. He was also known to be ready to assist family, neighbors and friends in any of their projects. The family wished to thank the staff at St. Vincent's Cancer Center, Amber Care Hospice and two individuals his cousin Jasper Roybal and his neighbor Danny Roybal who were always present to assist Sammy.
Cremation has taken place, services are pending at this time.
