Samuel G. Roybal Jr., a true family man and pillar of strength, passed away on May 18, 2026, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Born on Christmas Day in 1944 in El Rancho, NM, Sam lived a life rich with love, dedication, humor, and craftsmanship, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Sam was a man of many talents and careers. For 30 years, he served New Mexico Beverage with pride as a sales representative and manager. He later went on to serve as a correctional officer at the New Mexico State penitentiary. His last work adventure was to contribute to the opening of Camel Rock casino and assumed the roll of the pit boss.
A proud veteran, Sam served bravely in Vietnam as a Sergeant in the Marines. His exemplary service earned him numerous commendations, including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, as well as Pistol and Rifle Sharpshooter Badges. His commitment to his country was as steadfast as his commitment to his family.
Family was Sams heart and soul. He shared over 60 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Patsy (Rivera) Roybal, his lifelong companion and the love of his life. Together, they nurtured their children, Chris, Ronnie, and Karmella, and delighted in their grandchildren RC, Oceana, Michael, Adrianna, Samantha, Lukas and great grandchildren Azariah and Alaya. Sam was a mentor and second dad not just to his own family but to many who looked up to him for guidance, wisdom, and a good laugh.
Sam's home was always full of joy and lively gatherings. His favorite season was Christmas, during which he would don a Santa costume. He decorated his motorhome with Christmas lights, cruising around the plaza Christmas caroling with family and friends. His beautifully decorated motorhome even earned a feature in the New Mexican newspaper . Interestingly, both he and his son Chris celebrate their birthdays on Christmas Day. Sundays were special days when he cooked breakfast for family and neighbors alike, serving up pancakes with peanut butter and plenty of stories. Those around him fondly remember his unique talent for balancing babies in the palm of his hand—a trick that made everyone nervous, yet he never dropped a single one. His yard was his stage where he proudly showcased his trucks and an array of projects born from his skilled hands and creative mind.
An avid collector of vintage items and a master carpenter, Sam built it all—the patio, gazebo, wagons, and even a stagecoach. His playful side shone brightest in the surprises he crafted, like magic tricks and the infamous outhouse filled with scary dolls designed to give his grandchildren a good-hearted fright. When not crafting or joking, he enjoyed Rancheros and Mariachi music, playing cards, camping, boating, and simply spending precious time with those he loved.
Sam's life was shaped by the strong family foundation laid by his parents, Samuel G. Roybal Sr. and Elisida (Sanchez) Roybal, who have since passed on, along with his son Chris Roybal, grandson RC Roybal, and his sisters Sadie Armijo and Lily Casaus. Though these loved ones are no longer with us. Sam's spirit and lessons live on vibrantly through his surviving family. He was part of a large family that included eight sisters and one brother. The surviving sisters are Lorraine, Priscilla, Edna, Theresa, Roberta and Eileen, along with their brother, Dennis.
His son shared, "If we could be half the man he was, we would be doing good." This simple truth speaks volumes about Sam's character—he epitomized integrity, love, humor, and strength, lighting up the lives of all fortunate enough to know him.
Services to honor Sam's remarkable life will be held at Rivera Family Funeral & Cremations of Santa Fe, with a viewing from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM on June 8, followed by a rosary at 7:00 PM. A Mass will be celebrated at The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi on June 9 at 11:00 AM. Sam will be laid to rest with inurnment at Santa Fe National Cemetery on June 11 at 11:15 AM.
Sam Roybal was a real man—a mentor, a jokester, a craftsman, and above all, a devoted family man who leaves behind a home full of cherished memories and hearts forever warmed by his love. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Patsy, children Ronnie and Karmella, grandchildren Oceana, Michael, Adrianna, Samantha, and Lukas, and great grandchildren Azariah and Alayaas well as countless friends and family whose lives he touched profoundly.
