Salvador Chavez, known affectionately as "Macho Man Sal," passed away unexpectedly on May 27, 2026, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 5, 1943, in Leyba, NM, Salvador’s life was a vibrant tapestry woven with unwavering dedication, boundless talent, and deep-rooted love for those closest to his heart.
A man of many trades and manifold talents, Salvador was a true craftsman whose skilled hands shaped not only the homes of his beloved family but also some of the most cherished buildings throughout Santa Fe. As a foreman for a prestigious construction company, he left a lasting legacy etched in every nail and beam. It was said that God blessed his hands—not just with the ability to build, but to bring his vision of home and community to life. Among his proudest accomplishments was his unfaltering devotion to supporting his children and being their steadfast pillar of strength whenever they needed him.
Salvador’s rugged exterior—a strong-willed, quick-tempered, and often blunt man with a foul mouth—belied a heart overflowing with love, especially for his grandchildren. A lifelong devoted Catholic, his word was gold, and his presence a force to be reckoned with. If you earned his respect, it remained unshakable; if not, you certainly knew it. His family fondly remembers him as a funny grandpa who brought joy and laughter to their lives. He taught his grandchildren to sing, gave them their first lessons in riding horses, and handed down invaluable carpentry and roofing skills to his sons, always proudly tagging his initials on everything he touched.
The echoes of family card nights remind them of a man who delighted in the simple pleasures: playing cards, strumming his guitar, wearing his treasured silver and turquoise jewelry, and sharing stories—both grounded in fact and woven from the fabric of imaginative tale. A Golden Gloves boxer for the Boys Club in his youth, Salvador was no stranger to the thrill of a good fight, a testament to the fierce determination and spirit that defined him. In the kitchen, he was celebrated for his unforgettable beans, chile, and posole.
His loving wife, Olivia, to whom he was married for 63 years, stood by his side through every triumph and trial. He is survived by his daughter Ruth (Bryan Saiz), and his sons Joseph (Elaine), Daniel, Salvador (Angelique Montoya~Chavez), and Salomon (Celina). His legacy continues in his cherished grandchildren: Ericalynn Tapia, Randy Tapia, Ashley Chavez, Angelo Chavez, Daniel Jr. Chavez, Jarred Chavez, Savaughna Chavez, Aaliyah Chavez, Brielle Chavez, and Brandon Chavez, as well as his great-grandchildren Raquel Romero, Mariah Romero, Aubrey Tapia, Ethan Carrillo, Paisley Chavez, Malakai Chavez, Alara Chavez, and Josiah Chavez.
The family grieves deeply the loss of daughter Diana Chavez and granddaughter Chantal Chavez, whose memories live on alongside Salvador’s in the hearts of numerous relatives and friends.
Salvador Chavez was more than a builder of homes and structures; he was an architect of memory, love, and enduring family bonds. His presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him—a man whose passion, strength, and spirit forged a legacy as solid and enduring as the foundations he laid. In the hush of these quiet days, the stories, laughter, and lessons of "Macho Man Sal" will forever echo in the homes and hearts he so lovingly built.
