Richard David Ames, a man whose life was marked by resilience, humor, and an insatiable curiosity, passed away on April 8, 2026, at the University of New Mexico. Born on June 26, 1979, in New York City, Richard's journey was one filled with moments of joy, challenge, and profound growth.
A jack of all trades, Richard found his greatest joy in the simple yet fulfilling task of tending vending machines with Coca Cola. This job reflected his appreciation for the small pleasures in life. His personality was distinctly his own—stubborn and onery, yet accompanied by a warm sense of humor that brightened the days of those around him. Fueled by an unending curiosity, he explored many interests, from collecting stamps and coins to listening to scanners and metal detecting, even dabbling in chemical experiments that spoke to his inquisitive mind.
One of the cherished memories that captures Richard's playful nature involves a day at the State Fair. His devoted father, Carl Ames, called out frantically after thinking Richard had been lost among the crowds. Unknown to Carl, Richard was playfully trailing right behind him, making the search into a lighthearted game until a concerned citizen brought the fun to a close. This story is a testament to Richard’s enduring spirit and love for a good-hearted adventure.
Richard's life was also marked by notable achievements and deep passions. A Special Olympian, he was celebrated for his talent and enthusiasm in hockey and softball and maintained a lifelong love for all sports. His pride extended beyond sports; two of his proudest accomplishments were regaining his faith in God and finding a loving, warm home during his last year—an environment where he could truly thrive. Additionally, he embraced fitness as a new hobby, demonstrating his continued desire to grow and care for himself.
Educated at a community college, Richard’s path was uniquely his own. Despite any challenges, he consistently showed determination and strength, traits that his family and friends admired deeply. His legacy is further enriched by his generous act of donating his heart, kidney, and lungs after his passing, gifts that offered hope and life to others in need—a final, profound demonstration of his caring nature.
Richard is survived by his devoted father, Carl Ames, who was a steadfast presence throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anita Ames, whose memory undoubtedly lives on in the hearts of those who knew Richard.
Richard David Ames will be remembered not only for the various roles he embraced, but for the warmth, humor, and genuine zest for life he shared so freely. His story is one of perseverance, love, and the enduring power of hope, touching the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A memorial service will be held in Albuquerque, and he will be buried with his mother at a simple graveside service at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos, NM. Details will follow.
