It is with great sadness that the family of Philip announces his passing on May 16th, 2025. Philip was born on September 18th, 1948 was 76 years old and after fighting an aggressive cancer he passed away in his home in peace surrounded by his family. Philip was an incredible husband, father, friend, and champion for all that was good. He grew up in Brooklyn NY, and lived an extraordinary life. He started with a career in art, sculpture, and photography and attended Brooklyn College and Brooklyn Museum School of Art. He was mentored at the New York Times and worked as a freelance photographer capturing some of the most iconic moments of the 60’s and 70’s published in magazines and newspapers in New York. Philips passion for life and learning took him to so many unique places and careers; from working as a lumber jack and traveling with the carnival circuit on the east coast to deep sea tuna fishing and joining a theater company on the west coast. As he hitchhiked across the country he landed in Santa Fe in 1978 and found a home here. While working as a carpenter he met his wife Barbara where they began an extraordinarily beautiful life together. Philip started his real estate career in New York and continued working in the field in Santa Fe. He eventually became a Co-Owner at French & French Fine Properties where he expanded the company into the largest real estate company in Santa Fe at the time. In his 40 plus years as a Real Estate Broker Philip mentored and collaborated with so many in the community. His contribution to the real estate community includes Co-Chair of the Mediation Committee for the New Mexico State Board of Realtors, serving on the Professional Standards for both the state and local boards of realtors. He most recently served on the Government Affairs Committee for the Santa Fe Board of Realtors and the Citizens Review Committee for the Santa Fe Public Schools. Philip spent his career helping to shape the city of Santa Fe. His passion for helping others achieve is intrinsic to who he was and our community will forever feel the impact of his work. His generous spirit, wisdom, and guidance was felt by so many people. He was the best story teller, and his life stories always put a smile on everyone’s face. His animated personality with his contagious laugh always brightened the room. He had a great love for life and all that it had to offer from being outdoors fishing and hunting; to traveling, partying, and forever learning. Philip with his wife Barbara raised his daughters to engage in life as he did; to be creative and fiercely passionate about their own lives, never backing down from a challenge and always ensuring that they stand up for what is right. He was a warrior for his children and always provided guidance and protection when they needed it. He loved his grandchildren and always stopped for the opportunity to tell everyone how proud he was of them.
Philip was proceeded in death by his father Benjamin Gudwin, his mother Gertrude Gudwin, and his incredible wife Barbara Gudwin. He is survived by his two adoring daughters, Sari Lynch and husband Buddy Lynch, Ariel Gudwin and husband Chris Blakely; as well has his grandchildren Louis “Lincoln” Lynch, Guinevere “Juliet” Lynch, Ruthe Brooke Blakely and his sister and brother Cindy Knopf and Mitchel Gudwin.
