Nellie Ortega

May 16, 1941 — June 27, 2025

Nellie Ortega, born May 16, 1941, in Mora, New Mexico, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family, who engulfed her in prayer as she entered eternal rest. Her final moments were filled with grace, faith, and the warmth of those who loved her deeply.

Nellie was the beloved daughter of the late Jose and Carlota Lopez. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Stella, Dolores, and Mary, and her brother Gilbert.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Silviano “Silver” Ortega, and their children: Joann (Joe), Darla, Yvonne (Julian), Ben (Carmella), Art, Daniel, and Reymundo (Tiffany). She also leaves behind her siblings: brother Alfred; and sisters Geneva (Billy), Priscilla (JR), Joann (Billy), and Crissie.

Nellie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was the heart of her family, always offering her love, guidance, and a warm presence that made everyone feel at home. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her children, 17 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren, and her best friend Tita who filled her days with laughter, love, and pride.

One of Nellie’s favorite pastimes was watching sports. A true fan at heart, she cheered on the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Cowboys with great passion—but she held a special, secret soft spot for the Kansas City Chiefs, thanks to her fondness for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Nellie’s life was a beautiful testament to love, devotion, and quiet strength. Her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and deep care for others will forever be remembered by all who were blessed to know her and love her so very much.
