Michael A. Pekarcik, born August 5, 1940, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2026, at his cherished home in Santa Clara, New Mexico, a residence he carefully designed and built himself as the first home on his road. He departed surrounded by his loving family, a gentle testament to the close bonds he forged throughout his life.

Mr. Pekarcik’s life was distinguished by a remarkable breadth of accomplishment and a deep commitment to those he loved. Raised in a family that valued hard work and connection, he went on to carve his own path, both literally and figuratively. An accomplished self-taught woodworker, Michael brought beauty and craftsmanship into the world through his furniture, art pieces, and crosses. His talent was well recognized, and many were eager to commission his creations, each piece reflecting his meticulous attention to detail and passion for the craft.

After obtaining a bachelor's degree in art from college in California, Michael moved to New Mexico and spent time working in retail at local stores where his genuine enjoyment of conversation and helping others left a lasting impression on customers and colleagues alike. He was also a traveling art teacher for a period, and he holds a special place in the memories of his students. Later, he prioritized family by staying home to care for his children and manage household affairs, all the while continuing his woodworking pursuits.

Mr. Pekarcik proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, where he was honored with two sharpshooting accommodations, a reflection of both his discipline and commitment to excellence.

Michael’s enthusiasm for life extended well beyond his professional and military accomplishments. A passionate train enthusiast, he delighted in assembling and painting model trains, collecting photos, and sharing real-life train adventures with his children. Some of the family’s fondest memories are their expeditions across New Mexico to see historic trains in motion or placing coins on the tracks—a playful tradition that brought them moments of joy. His children remember the fun of these trips, as well as the uniquely packed school lunches, often featuring sandwiches in bread bags and iced tea ingeniously stored in empty peanut butter jars.

Family time was precious, filled with outings to watch horse racing at The Downs and spirited support for Los Angeles sports teams—a connection to his younger years living in California, near LAX, where sporting events, planes, and trains all became part of his world. Michael’s love for car racing, NASCAR, and music—particularly the melodies of Elvis Presley—added extra dimensions to a character defined by a passion for living.

He was, above all, a loving and deeply caring family man, always helpful and hands-on in his relationships. His faith provided him with strength and comfort, especially during times of illness. As a devout Catholic, Michael maintained his relationship with the Lord throughout his life.

Left to treasure his memory are his beloved children: Marie Granich (Tom), Phillip Pekarcik (Maria), Steven Pekarcik (Chantel), and Dorian Pekarcik (Ines Fessler). His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Trisha, Andrew, Marielouise, Zachary, Christopher, and Leah, as well as his great-grandchildren, Vanellope, Mileena, Lisanna, and Coraline, brother-in-law Dave Chavarilla, and cherished kittens, Suzette, Suzie, Tiger, Gray, and Blacktop. Additionally, Michael is survived by many cherished family members and close friends. Each family member reflects an aspect of his character, carrying forward the love, humor, and devotion he so freely shared.

Michael was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Melinda Pekarcik; his sister, Jane Lawrence; his parents, Adolf and Marion Pekarcik; and his parents-in-law, Juan and Gregorita Chavarria.

Throughout his years, Michael A. Pekarcik set an inspiring example. His lasting achievements are not only seen in the tangible beauty of his woodworking or the home he built but live on vibrantly in the warmth, resilience, and togetherness of his family—his greatest pride and joy.

The family of Mr. Pekarcik have entrusted the caring professionals at Rivera Family Funeral Home of Espanola to support them during this time. We offer our heartfelt condolences to all.
