Mary Louise Williams passed away on January 1, 2026, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was 89. Mary Louise (also known as “Mary Lou”) was a gifted teacher, a lover of history, a solid friend to many, and dedicated to environmental and civil issues. She cared about the “common good” and used that phrase frequently in her writing and conversations.
She grew up in Mountainair, New Mexico, with a businessman father and a mother who had been a one-room schoolhouse teacher (Fred and Mabel Hail). She had an older brother and sister (Wilfred and Jo), and learning was always part of their lives. Their mother would drive to Belen and even as far as Albuquerque to get books. Mary Lou attended Cotty College in Nevada, Missouri, and then the University of New Mexico, where she received a B.A. in Education in 1958. Later, she received a Master of Arts in 1980 from St. John’s College in Santa Fe.
Her teaching and consulting changed lives. She was an educator in the Los Alamos Schools, teaching history, government, and energy and the environment at Los Alamos High School until she retired in 1988. She founded a group of students called “Students to Save the Environment” that travelled to other schools and attended hearings where they spoke on important environmental topics. This was ground-breaking in the 1970s. Her husband, Michael Williams, assisted. She also was involved in Mock Trial with her students, reflecting her belief that everyone needed to know how the law and the courts worked. Before and after she retired, she worked as a consultant and editor on a variety of projects in education related to the environment, the law, citizenship, and civil rights. She travelled internationally for some of those projects.
Mary Lou also served on the J. Robert Oppenheimer Committee from 1995-2019 and was actively involved there in bringing in distinguished lecturers to Los Alamos including Nobel Prize winners, managing the scholarship program, and a variety of other activities. She was also dedicated to the efforts to exonerate Oppenheimer, writing to various officials and attorneys as well as visiting some of them in Washington, DC. She rejoiced when that was finally achieved in 2022.
Her husband, Michael, passed in 2021. They enjoyed over fifty years of marriage together and were an example to so many in the way they loved and supported each other’s interests. They shared a passion for Shakespeare and travel.
Mary Lou’s later years were spent at Sierra Vista at Vista Living Care in Santa Fe where she was loved by the staff and received visitors.
She is survived by her dear friends, her dedicated students, and beloved nieces and nephews.
