Mary Katherine Baker, a cherished soul whose life was a testament to love, faith, and family, passed away peacefully at her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on June 14, 2026. Born on February 23, 1954, in the same city where she would spend her entire life, Mary’s journey was one marked by devotion—to her Lord, her family, and her community.

A graduate of Santa Fe High School, Mary furthered her skills at VoTech, earning her dental license and embarking on a career as a dental assistant that spanned some 35 years. For decades, she tended to countless smiles across Santa Fe, not only ensuring that teeth were healthy and beautiful but also touching people’s lives with her warmth and dedication. Beyond her professional care, she contributed to the well-being of children in her role as a School Bus Aide for Santa Fe Public Schools, an extension of her nurturing spirit.

Mary’s heart was deeply rooted in her Christian faith, which she carried with grace and enthusiasm throughout her life. She taught Sunday School, volunteered at her church, and with her husband Tom, often delighted congregations by singing church specials during services. Her joy in worship was infectious, especially when she played the tambourine, filling the sanctuary with spirited praise. She passed on this faith and love for worship to her daughter and son in childhood, nurturing the seed that continued to grow with her granddaughter.

The memories shared by those who knew Mary paint a picture of a vibrant and loving woman. She relished moments holding hands with her husband during peaceful walks around the Plaza, joyous family camping trips, and magical visits to Disneyland. Dancing and singing were her ways of bringing happiness to everyday life—whether she was cleaning around the house or sharing playful moments with her daughter and granddaughter, weaving joy into simple pleasures. Mary’s creativity extended into her crafty nature, and she delighted in playing Barbies with her daughter and granddaughter, amassing a treasured collection that symbolized her closeness with them.

Mary’s personality radiated generosity and care. A deeply loving woman, she ensured no one went hungry, using her excellent cooking skills to nourish family and friends alike. Putting others before herself was her natural way, embodying humility and selflessness. Her proudest accomplishments included her steadfast faith in the Lord, her enduring marriage, and her unwavering devotion to caring for her husband William Thomas Baker, her daughter Georgia and her husband Jon, her granddaughter Mariah, and her grandsons Jonathan Christopher and Xavier Alexander. She held a profound and loving bond with her sisters Lourdes Quintana, Grace Mares (Rudy), and Evelyn Zamora (Benny), as well as with her brothers Michael Lopez (Ellie) and Paul Lopez; together, they were affectionately known as "The Golden Girls," with Mary often lovingly called the Betty White of the group. Family connections included cherished relationships with her goddaughter Ashley Lopez and godson Troy Mace, along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Mary’s life was also marked by poignant memories of those she loved who went before her: her beloved son Nicholas Baker, her parents Miguel and Tonita Lopez, and her brothers Leroy, Richard, and Lalo. Additionally, she mourned the loss of her godson Nathaniel and her parents-in-law Eli and Toni Tafoya.

Her passing leaves a gentle but profound void in the hearts of all who knew her. Mary Katherine Baker’s legacy is one of faith lived fully, family treasured deeply, and love given freely. Her spirit continues to dance in the melodies sung within her church, in the hands held on quiet walks, and in the smiles she so lovingly nurtured throughout her life. She will forever be remembered as a beacon of kindness, devotion, and light in the Santa Fe community and beyond.
