Maria Ercilia Montoya

Maria Ercilia Montoya, lovingly known as Ercilia, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 at her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, surrounded by her devoted family. A cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, Ercilia’s warmth and kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

She dedicated over three decades of service as head cashier at Furr’s Cafeteria, where she not only formed lifelong friendships but also delighted generations of children with bubble gum and candy — a simple gesture that brought joy to many.

Following her retirement after 33 years of service, Ercilia spent her time enjoying what she loved most: being with her family.

Ercilia is survived by her children: daughter Anna Montoya (Michael), sons Benny Montoya (Darlene), and Elmer Montoya; her beloved granddaughter Laura Montoya; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and happiness.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Luciano Montoya; her mother Urgencia Rael; father Nestor Real; mother-in-law Cirila Pacheco; ten siblings; her daughter Nora Montoya; and great-grandson Ryder Nelson.

Pallbearers will be Darian Land, Ryder Nelson, Shaun Montoya, Jesse Montoya, Ryan Nelson, and Charles Lehman.

Ercilia’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her. Her gentle spirit, devotion to family, and radiant smile will never be forgotten.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all those who helped care for Ercilia in her final days, especially the compassionate team at Roadrunner Hospice.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025 at Rivera Kiva Chapel of Light viewing will be held at 9:00 a.m. Service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be recited on Thursday, July 24, 2025 at Truchas Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Reception will follow interment at Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church.
