Lupita Adela Vigil, born in 1940, passed away on October 30, 2026. She will be remembered as a vibrant, loving woman whose warmth, humor, and joyful spirit touched everyone around her. Very social by nature, she lit up the room when she walked in, and her playful, joking way made her a favorite wherever she went. Lupita lived life to the fullest and brought that same energy and heart to the people she loved most.
Born and raised in Arroyo Hondo, Lupita was one of 12 children and was known as a supportive, loving, and kind sister, a true best friend to those closest to her. She worked for years as a secretary, continuing in that role until 2001. She was also an amazing craftsman, with a creative touch that could be seen in the beauty of the things she made and even in the way people remember her gift wrapping. Her home was a place of welcome and celebration, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas, when everyone crammed into her house to be together.
Lupita found happiness in so many simple and beautiful things. She loved jewelry, especially earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, and she enjoyed collecting pens. Music was part of her life, from Hank Williams to Spanish songs, and she loved dancing to Freddie Fender. She cherished the Taos Fiestas, arriving early and staying late to enjoy every moment. She had a fondness for pink, lavender, and purple, and she was known for the treats she loved and shared, including biscochitos and flan. Family and friends also treasured the foods she made, especially her prune pie and empanalitas.
Above all, Lupita’s grandchildren were her life, and each one held a special place in her heart. Her love for family shaped the life she lived and the memories she leaves behind.
She is survived by her husband, Juan Martinez; her children, Darrell and Lisa, Orlando Jr. and Vanessa, and Mario and Jessica; her grandchildren, Isaac, Tony and Andrea, Darrell Jr., Kevin, Marivel, and Esquias; and her great-grandchildren, Isaac Jr., Marcos, Monique, Eddie, Monroe, Jovan, Ernestine, Emiliana, Alexis, Matthew, Isabella, and Emmaliyah. She is also survived by her sisters, Viola Silva, Bennie Ortega, and Adela Maroy Burch; her special niece, Michelle Trujillo; her special sister-in-law, Lupita Arellano; and her aunt, Darrell Vigil.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Esequiel and Adel; her spouse, Orlando Vigil; her sons, Merlin and Matthew; her in-laws, Esequias Vigil and Patrocinia; and her siblings, Benino, Manuel, Orlando, Cordelia, Honorio, Flavio, Demecio, and Vidal.
Pallbearers will be Tony Vigil, Derrell Vigil, Kevin Vigil, Esquias Vigil, Marivel Vigil, and Monique Vigil. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Vigil and Emma Vigil.
A Rosary will be held on November 8 at 6 PM at Rivera Funeral Home. Mass will be held on November 9 at 10 AM at Holy Trinity Parish, with burial to follow at Upper Arroyo Hondo Cemetery.
Lupita leaves behind a legacy of laughter, color, music, celebration, and deep devotion to family. She will be remembered for the joy she brought into every gathering, the love she poured into her home, and the way she made each person feel welcomed and cherished. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
