Karen M. Pacheco of Medanales, NM July 21, 1957- November 6, 2025, born in El Rito, New Mexico to Pedro and Celia Herrera. She departed this life surrounded by her loving family. Karen lived a life that illuminated the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and beautiful memories.
Karen's deep connections with her family was the heart of her existence. She shared a profound bond with her siblings - May Alire (Porferio), Ruben Herrera (Emilia), Pete Herrera (Ramona), and Nicholas Herrera (Beth)— often taking time to reach out and check on them, cherishing every conversation.
Karen became a mother at a young age, she was immensely proud of her children-Marcy Romero (Fernando), Monica Martinez-Archuleta (Matthew), Aaron Martinez III (Anne), Antonio Martinez and Erin Martinez. Friends would remind them how proud their momma was of them as she often took time to share their accomplishments with those who would listen.
She was proud of her grandchildren, Julia Martinez (Maȟpíya), Kristan Martinez-Archuleta, Tyler Archuleta, Faith Trujillo, Jaden Archuleta-Smith (Jalil), Mateo Martinez, Noah Archuleta, Damian Martinez, Jack and Miles Simon, Liliannah Perez, and Milio Martinez. Each grandchild held a special place in her heart and she took great pride in their accomplishments. Karen is preceded in death by her parents Pedro and Celia Herrera, her brother Patrick Herrera, nephew Eugene Alire, and her beloved Great Granddaughter baby Čhaŋté Luz Martinez-Black Elk.
She had a contagious joy for life, always greeting others with her radiant smile and infectious laugh. Those who crossed her path often described her as a "fireball," a woman with an enormous heart who could elevate any moment with her vibrant spirit. In all aspects of her life, Karen embodied joy; she cherished music and dancing, oftentimes finding herself enjoying dancing at local music events.
Though she leaves behind a void that will be felt deeply, her spirit will remain alive in the memories shared by the many she touched throughout her life. Her sparkle, her smile, and her laughter will be cherished and remembered by all. Karen’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with strength, joy, and unwavering love, and she will forever be missed by those who were blessed to know her.
Celebration of life will be held at Rivera Family Funeral Home, in Espanola, NM, on Friday November 14, 2025, at 11am. Join the family in sharing a meal at Rio Arriba County Event Center in Abiquiu, NM (122A State Rd 554 Abiquiu) following the program.
