Jose “Salvador” Olguin, aged 86, of El Guique, New Mexico, originally from Tierra Amarilla, peacefully passed away on March 25, 2026, at Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico. He departed this life after a courageous and well-fought battle with congestive heart failure, embraced by the love and presence of his family.

Born on December 27, 1939, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sal’s life was marked by a steadfast work ethic, a deeply caring nature, and an engaging spirit that delighted those around him. Known affectionately as “El Cementero,” he carved out a lifelong career as a master craftsman in carpentry and concrete finishing. Renowned for his precision and perfectionism, Sal took great pride in his work ensuring that every cement slab was executed flawlessly. His skilled hands contributed to various projects throughout New Mexico, including the notable construction of the old Arby’s location in Espanola, now Domino’s, and he generously lent his expertise to local churches such as Santo Niño Church in Tierra Amarilla, Sacred Heart Church in Espanola, and San Jose Church in Hernandez. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Sal remained committed to his roots, working in mines and plants in Farmington and Bloomfield, and laboring in the construction industry throughout his career.

Sal’s personality was characterized by his hardworking spirit, strength, and warmth. He was a perfectionist who found joy in being social, funny, and deeply loving, especially toward his grandchildren. He was known for having a quick wit and always knowing the right thing to say. His passions extended beyond work; he loved to be out and about, enjoying the company of friends and family, indulging in good food, frequenting casinos for leisure, and never missing an opportunity to engage in fun and laughter. He was an avid sports enthusiast with a particular fondness for football—rooting for his favorite team, the Washington Redskins—and was an avid NBA fan. Supporting his grandchildren’s high school basketball games brought him immense joy, especially cheering for teams such as the Escalante Lobos, Pojoaque Elks, and Espanola Sundevils. Sal also cherished his time outdoors and his devotion to his dogs.

Sal’s legacy is deeply enriched by his family, who survive him and continue to hold his memory close. He leaves behind his children: Alice Debra Martinez, Christi Olguin, Gilbert Olguin, and Rita Lynn Chavez (Edward). His grandchildren include April Reynolds (Matt), Edward Chavez III (Liz), Javier Chavez (Krysta), Felicia Chavez (Julian), and Alicia Chavez (Nate), along with great-granddaughters Amaya Archuleta and Destiny Garcia. He is also survived by nieces Yolanda Lucero (James), Pamela Romero (Linette), nephews Leroy Garcia Jr (Lisa), Roman Martinez, and David Martinez, godson James Martinez (Gloria), and a niece whom he regarded as a daughter, Yvonne “Pinky” Gonzales (Jesse). Sal’s companion and best friend, Belen Maestas, remains a valued presence in his family’s lives.

Additional surviving family members include a cherished woman Sal called his second mother, Mary Martinez; brothers Danny (Teddy) Martinez, Louie (Threasa) Martinez Sr., Johnny (Suzanne) Martinez; sisters Dorothy Martinez, and Tete (Deanna) Martinez; as well as numerous other relatives and treasured friends.

Jose “Salvador” Olguin was preceded in death by his parents Manuel Lucero and Fidelina Olguin-Duran; son Anthony Olguin; sisters Rose Garcia, Cornelia Romero, and Sylvia Martinez; grandson Raymond C. Martinez; granddaughter Valerie Olguin-Grondin; niece Melissa Duran; brothers-in-law C.B. Romero and Leroy Garcia; sons-in-law Gary Martinez and Raymond Martinez; and Dulcinea Olguin, mother of his children.

Throughout his life, Sal was held in high esteem not only for his professional skill but also for his capacity to bring joy and enthusiasm to social gatherings. His love of music and dancing further highlighted a man who embraced life fully and with vitality. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his laughter, his love for a good time, and his unwavering dedication to his family.

The family extends profound gratitude to the Presbyterian Home Health Care Team of New Mexico—including Yvonne, Heather, Steve, Cha-Cha, Marcy, Roe, Chaplain Jeff, Leah, and Dr. Johnson—for their compassionate care during Sal’s final days. They also thank all family and friends for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support in this difficult time.

Honorary pallbearers will be Clyde Martinez, Joseph Salazar, Danny Archuleta, Armando (Red) Sanchez, Eloy Martinez, and James Martinez.

A viewing to honor Sal's life is scheduled for April 8th, 2026, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm, followed by a Rosary service from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. Both events will be held at Rivera Family Funeral Home of Espanola, located at 305 Calle Salazar, Espanola, NM 87532. Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30am April 10th, 2026, at San Jose Catholic Church in Hernandez, New Mexico. Burial will follow at San Jose Cemetery. Following Sal's burial, a meal will be shared at Anthony's at the Delta in Espanola, all are welcome.
