Santa Fe, NM – John Greenspan, age 76, died peacefully in his sleep at home, after a struggle with adrenal cancer. John was a loving husband and father, as well as a respected lawyer and a highly-regarded radio show host. He was born in New York City to Dr. Edward and Paula Greenspan. Beginning in 1946, he lived in Baltimore with his mother and step-father, Adolf Hamburger. He graduated from The Park School in Baltimore in 1958, Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1962 and the University of Maryland -School of Law in 1966. He worked for the Legal Aid Bureau of Baltimore until 1973 when he took a job with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as an attorney in Washington, D.C.
John retired from the FCC in 2000 and moved to Santa Fe, NM with his wife, Julianne Bodnar. He hosted radio shows in KSFR, Santa Fe Public Radio and KHFM. John was President of the Northern New Mexico Radio Foundation, which managed KSFR, and served on the Boards of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, the Santa Fe Symphony, the Santa Fe Friends of Jazz, and the New Mexico Music Commission Foundation Board. He served as President of the ALH Foundation for twenty years. He also worked for the New Mexico Legislature. He enjoyed hiking (North and South Rim) to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, climbing Longs Peak, running and bicycling, attending musical events, and spending time with family and friends. He was a life-long Baltimore Orioles fan. John was a man with great passion and enthusiasm for life, noted for his optimism, generosity, sense of humor, and kindness to others. His creative spirit brought delight to many.
He is survived by his wife, Julianne Bodnar; children, Katie (Alex) Applefeld of Baltimore, and Teddy (Emily) Greenspan of Los Angeles; four grandchildren, Nolan and Phoebe Greenspan, and Charlie and Daisy Applefeld; siblings John S. (Geri) Neuberger of Overland Park, KS and Bonnie Phillips of Hilton Head, SC. He was preceded in death by his parents Paula Unger Hamburger (Adolf) and Edward Greenspan (Norma). John will be greatly missed by many.
