Johnny Nemecio Quintana, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, in Española, New Mexico. He was born on September 25, 1939, in Española, where he would later establish his roots and legacy.

Johnny was a proud graduate of Española High School and went on to earn a degree in mathematics from St. Michael’s College in Santa Fe. His education laid the foundation for a long and distinguished career at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he dedicated an impressive 33 years of service.

As a devoted military veteran, Johnny honorably served in the United States Army, a role he carried with pride and which he cherished for the rest of his life. His outgoing nature, dedication to family, and commitment to community made him a cherished figure among friends and acquaintances alike. Johnny was an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, where he attended services every Sunday. In his later years, even as circumstances changed, he remained steadfast in his faith, watching Mass on television weekly without fail.

Johnny's personal life was rich with love, having shared over 60 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Esther Quintana. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising three sons—Chris, David, and Issac—who he taught the values of hard work and integrity. His dedication extended to guiding and mentoring countless young athletes during his 17 years as a Little League coach alongside his brother Fred, leading the team to numerous state finals.

A man of the outdoors, Johnny had a profound appreciation for nature, finding joy in fishing, hunting, and camping. He often embarked on memorable fishing trips with his sons, sharing his skills and instilling a love for the sport in them. His passion for baseball began in his youth and continued throughout his life, having played for St. Michael’s College and later in local leagues.

His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the love he imparted to his family. Johnny is survived by his beloved wife, Esther; his sons, Chris Quintana (Shelly), David Quintana (Greta), and Issac Quintana (Zenaida); his grandchildren, Mecole, Adrian, Taylor, Gabriel, and Noah Quintana; his sisters-in-law, Rosina Vigil (Carlos), Theresa Roybal, and Virginia Quintana; his brother-in-law, John Roybal (Anna); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, and close friends who will carry forward his spirit.

He reunites in eternal rest with his parents, Fred and Amelia Quintana; his brothers, Perry Quintana (Elaine) and Fred Quintana (Diana); his beloved nephew, Danny Quintana; and his father and mother-in-law, Manuel and Mabel Roybal, along with his brother-in-law, Jim Roybal.

In honor of Johnny, a Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, February 9th, 2026, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz. Mass will begin at 11:00am. Interment will follow at 1:30pm at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. All are welcome to attend. The family of Mr. Quintana has entrusted Rivera Family Funeral Home in Espanola to care for him; we offer our sincere condolences to all.

Johnny Nemecio Quintana lived a life defined by service, dedication, and love for his family. His warm spirit and unwavering support will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
