With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of John Starrs Geekie, Jr. on September 15, 2026, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is survived by Dorothy, his beloved wife of 60 years; his children, Susan and Henry Velazquez, John and Jessica Bennedson, Paul and Darlene Geekie, Dean and Kimberly Scott; his grandchildren, Enrique, Allegra, Nicolas, Jerard, Diego, Danica, Presley, and Brooklyn; and many extended family members and lifelong friends.
John was born in Queens, New York, and grew up in Elmont. He attended Sewanhaka High School, where he met and later married Dorothy. John began his studies at Nassau Community College before earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Hofstra University. During a business trip to California in 1974, John took the opportunity to stop in Denver and explore Colorado. The experience changed the course of his life, inspiring a cross-country move just one month later and sparking a lifelong love of the Rocky Mountains that brought him a deep sense of peace.
Education was important to John, and he was known to say that if he could have remained a student for his entire life, he would have. Early in his career, while working in finance, he taught evening accounting courses at the community college level and found great fulfillment in helping students achieve their goals. He later held several leadership positions within the banking industry and was recruited to New Mexico in 1984 to serve as Vice President and Treasurer of First National Bank of Santa Fe, where John and Dorothy spent the next 42 years building a life centered on family and the community they loved.
Despite a long battle with cancer, John remained steadfast in his faith and continued to look for the best in people. He was known for his patience, quiet strength, quick wit, deep intelligence, and unwavering support of those he loved. His family will forever cherish memories of day trips into the mountains, family vacations, holiday celebrations, special family occasions, and countless everyday moments made better simply because he was there.
John will be remembered for his curiosity, his ability to fix almost anything around the house, his love of reading, listening to music, and a good green chile cheeseburger, and his appreciation for the simple comforts of home and being with his family. Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather will be dearly missed.
Funeral services will take place on November 6, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Lutheran Church of the Servant, 2481 Legacy Court, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Memorial donations may be made to the church at santafelcos.com or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org. May all families affected by cancer be blessed with healing and peace.
