Jose Guillermo Pablo Baca, affectionately known as “Joe,” passed away peacefully at his home in Chimayo, New Mexico, on August 18, 2026. Born on June 30, 1944, in Chimayo, Joe’s life was deeply rooted in the community and traditions of Northern New Mexico.

Joe was a man who expressed his passion through his work and family. A talented mechanic, Joe dedicated most of his working years to mastering the intricacies of automotive repair, specializing in older models. His expertise was complemented by an innate talent for numbers and dates, skills that helped him excel in his vocation. Joe’s love for cars was not just technical; it was also creative. Known as “The Lowrider of Chimayo,” he owned, built, cruised, and sold a remarkable collection of lowriders and vintage cars throughout his life. Friends and community members often found him upgrading, trading, and “wheeling and dealing” his latest automotive projects—a true hallmark of his presence in Chimayo.

His children often worked alongside him, learning not only the mechanics of automobiles but also the value of diligence, craftsmanship, and perseverance. Joe’s legacy lives on through these lessons passed from one generation to the next.

A lover of car culture, Joe enjoyed cruising through town, often venturing as far as Taos or Penasco, taking pride in showcasing his meticulously maintained vehicles. In his younger years, he frequented car shows, always ensuring his cars were immaculate and running perfectly. He was also known for his love of Northern New Mexican music, often tuning into KDCE radio, and valued the camaraderie and memories created during these moments.

Joe’s strong connection with his wife was evident to all who knew them. Together, they cherished many evenings dancing at La Casa Nova Nightclub, surrounded by a vibrant circle of friends. In his later years, Joe found enjoyment in visits to Ohkay Casino, where he sometimes enjoyed a lucky win, delighting in the simple pleasures of life.

Faith played an integral role in Joe’s life. A devoted Catholic, he attended Mass at Holy Family Parish or Santuario De Chimayo when able, and in his later years, he found comfort in the Daily Rosary at 10:00am and Sunday Mass broadcasts. His spiritual dedication was a constant source of strength for both him and his family.

Joe’s signature old-school style was unmistakable; his ever-present black lowrider hat and neat appearance were part of his identity. Equally known for his friendly nature, he never hesitated to strike up a conversation and made friends with people from all walks of life. Many remember him fondly as “Joker” for his infectious sense of humor and ability to bring warmth and laughter to those around him.

His proudest accomplishments were his family and the deep connections he cultivated within it. Joe ensured he was a steadfast presence in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always caring for their wellbeing and offering unwavering support.

Joe is survived by his children, Annette (Pedro), Joanna (Gary), and Rubel (Carla); his grandchildren, Louie (Jessica), Ryan (Marisa), Angelo, Lynette (Chris), and Alexandra; as well as his great-grandchildren, Damien, Jayden, Anjelika, Dannikah, Deshawn, Dakotah, Alexis, and Santiago. Remembering Joe also are his brothers, Cornelio (Lydia), Gilberto (Ruby), and Orlando (Evelyn); and goddaughters Berna Salazar and Monica Romero, who held special places in his heart. Additionally, Jose is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, and cherished friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosalie Maria Baca, whom he deeply missed in his final years. Also preceding him are his granddaughter, Anjelika Maria Baca, and grandson, Anthony James Vigil; his father, Claudio Baca, and mother, Leonardita Baca; paternal grandparents Donaciano and Sarita Baca; maternal grandparents Fele and Socorro Ortega; mother-in-law, Celina Mascarenas; father-in-law, Marcelo Romero; son-in-law, Levi Baca; godson, Randell Martinez and nephew, Orlando Baca Jr.

Friends and family will gather to honor Joe’s memory at Holy Family Parish in Chimayo, New Mexico, with a Rosary at 1:00 p.m. on August 29, 2026, followed by a Funeral Mass at 2:00 p.m. Joe will then be laid to rest at Nuestra Senora De Dolores Cemetery, 1440 NM-76, Chimayo, New Mexico.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Ryan Baca, Louie Baca, Lynette Baca, Angelo Baca, Alexandra Archuleta and Damien Vigil. 

Honorary Pallbearers will be Anjelika Vigil, Dannikah Baca, Deshawn Baca, Jayden Baca, Alexis Baca, and Santiago Castillo.

Joe P. Baca’s life was a true reflection of passion, hard work, and devotion—to his craft, his faith, his hometown, and above all, his family. He leaves behind a cherished legacy and will be remembered with deep affection by all those whose lives he touched.
