First Sargent Jerry J Romero
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, and son, First Sergeant Jerry Romero. A proud member of the United States Army, Jerry lived a life rooted in service, strength, and unwavering devotion to his family. Jerry served as Caballero De Vargas from 1981-84 and was Caballero of the year in 1981-82, as well as served as a board member.
As a husband, he was loyal and steadfast, a partner who stood strong through life’s ups and downs. As a brother and son, he was caring and dependable. And as a father, he was our protector, our teacher, and our example of what it means to show up for the people you love.
Jerry was a proud member of the U.S. Army active federal service for 34 years. He served in Germany in 1978 and 1981 as well as served in the protection of Santa Fe Penitentiary during the riot in 1980. In the time he was a Team Leader, Maintenance mechanic Supervisor, Lt, Wheel Mechanic. He served in Korea in the 515th Command Battalion Team Spirit in '89 and '93.
Receiving his metals and awards such as; (State Awards) NM Long Service Medal 25yr/ x5 NM, Good Conduct Medal/NM Academy Service Ribbon/ x2 NM Outstanding Service Medal/ x6 NM Perfect Attendance
(Federal Awards) Army Service Ribbon/ National Defense Service Medal/ Meritorious Service Medal/ x4 Army Achievement medal/ x2 Armed Forces Reserve Medal/ Army Commendation/ x4 Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal
His highest was the Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal
He continued to work with the Santa Fe Public schools as well as Bernalillo Public Schools as a bus driver after retirement.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Cordelia Romero. Also, his brothers Robert, Richard and Felix Romero. Jerry is survived by his loving wife Kathy Romero of 37 years and his children Larry , Theresa (Juanita) , Jessica (Kasey), and Michael (Jerald). As well as his grandchildren Ashley Rae, Nick, Jellyica, Jayla, Pablo and Gordo. Brothers Mike (Marcella), Eddie (Phyllis) and sisters Pauline (Peter) and Dolores. Along with numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved very much. Jerry is survived by his loyal companions Who will continue to carry on his legacy of love, resilience and family.
Jerry’s legacy is not only in his service to his country, but in the love, laughter, and strength he gave to his family. Though he is no longer with us, his voice, his lessons, and his spirit will live on in each of us.
He was survived by his loyal pets Angel, Bruno and Max.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Services are as follows:
Rosary- Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at Rivera Family Kiva Chapel of light at 6:00pm. Funeral Mass on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 10:30am at Santa Maria De La Paz Catholic Church followed by internment at 1:30pm at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
