Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Isabel Madrid, 82, of Coyote New Mexico went to be with our Heavenly Father in the early morning hours of October 13, 2026. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and will be dearly missed by the countless lives she touched throughout her life.

Born on July 21, 1944, Isabel (affectionately also known as Bellè) spent her formative years with her parents Juan Isidro Serrano and Ofelia Serrano as well as her siblings Viviana, Gilberto, Ancelmo Roberto and Celerino, in the town she called home for the entirety of her life, Coyote New Mexico. Growing up she was the straightforward spitfire youngest child. A lifelong learner and champion for education, Isabel graduated from Charles Lathropope High School in 1962. Two years later she married Leonel Madrid, to whom she remained steadfastly married to until she was called to be with our Savior. She went on to earn her associate's degree in education and Isabel's love for education lead to a many years-long career in the school systems. A devout and lifelong parishioner of the Catholic Church, Isabel spent her life to sharing her faith with acts such as spearheading improvement projects for the church and helping students receive federal scholarships. Throughout her life, she opened her heart and home to those in need of a loving shoulder to cry on, pray with, eat with, and talk to. A person could not leave her home without being fed and offered one of Isabel's many artistic pursuits. From quilting and sewing to ceramics and jewelry making, Bellè filled hers and other's homes with pieces of her that were filled with color. Those close to her would describe her as a driven and tenacious women who was unafraid to say exactly what she thought. None know this better than her children Lionel, Leona, Steve, Johnny, and Jason, all of whom share the hallmark upfront and unwavering personality of their beloved mother. She often said being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother was her greatest joy.

Isabel is preceded in death by her parents Juan Isidro and Ofelia Serano, her siblings Viviana Gonzales, Gilberto Serrano, Ancelmo Roberto Serrano, Celerino Serrano, and Baby Doe Serrano. She is survived by her husband of 64 years Leonel (Leo) Madrid, her children Lionel Madrid, Leona Lujan (Gene Lujan Jr.), Steve Madrid, Johnny Madrid, and Jason Madrid, special daughter-in-law Veronica Olivas, her cousin Delfido Chofe Herrera and her friend/caregiver who was like family to her Lorena Delgado. She is also survived by survived by her 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and countless extended family members and close friends.

She will be remembered when the church bells remind us to go to mass, when wind blows through the bushes of her home in Coyote, when the sun sets over the red clay behind the home she built with her husband, and when we need a push to take the next step.
