Herbert McNeil Smith III

Herbert McNeil Smith III, affectionately known as Herbie, was born on February 2, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Herbert M. Smith Sr. and his mother Delores Davenport. After the loss of his mother, Herbie was lovingly raised by his grandmother Elizabeth, and later by his paternal great aunt Mary Lizzie Johnson and great uncle Alonzo Johnson. Growing up in a Christian household on Ellsworth Street, he attended South Philadelphia High School before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

Herbie was celebrated for his cheerful personality, becoming a beloved figure among family and friends, particularly because of his wit and humor. He shared a special bond with his older brother, Herbert Smith Jr., and was admired by his siblings, with whom he developed close relationships in adulthood.

In his early adult life, Herbie had three daughters: Lavonne, Kheli and Quia . In the early 1980s, he moved to California, where he was known as Herb. There, he worked as an engineer at Aero Tech and met his future wife, Virginia. Together, they had two children, Herbie Jr. and Crystal Nicole, as well as his bonus children, Laurie, Michael, and Benny, whom he helped raise.

Seeking better opportunities, Herb relocated to Seattle, Washington, where he successfully established two painting businesses. Despite being diagnosed with cancer, Herb exhibited remarkable resilience and overcame the illness. In the final chapter of his life, he and his wife retired to her native New Mexico, where they shared a loving home and many cherished years together.

Herb leaves to cherish his memories his children, Lavonne, Kheli, Quia, Crystal, Herbert Jr., son in law Philip Parks, 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, brother Robert (Bob), and sister's Margaret (Peggy), and Sandra (Sandy) who preceeded him in death. Sisters Carolyn, Barbara, brother Herbert Jr., (Vanessa), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends. He will forever be remembered for his humor, the funny stories shared, and the hard lessons imparted, each a testament to the love and laughter he brought into their lives.
