Listen to Obituary

Herbert Wayne Faling passed away on November 19, 2025, surrounded by his wife, Ann Marie, his daughter, Victoria, and his brother, Jeff. He spent his last days looking out at the view of the Ortiz Mountains and the Cerrillos Hills from the living room in his adopted home of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Herb was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on March 15, 1951, graduated from Grand Island High School, and then went on to the University of Nebraska where he graduated with a BA in Business and Economics. Following college, Herb entered the construction industry, moving to Denver, where he met his wife, and then to Washington, DC. From positions in project management to executive roles in development and construction, Herb was responsible for housing in Denver and later the management and budgets of multimillion-dollar projects in the Washington DC area.

He spent the majority of his career at Sigal Construction and Vornado/Charles E Smith, prominent firms in the Washington DC area. Herb was a lifelong Nebraska Cornhuskers fan – both football and women’s volleyball. Game times were sacred and not to be disrupted! He was a lover of history, an avid reader, a music lover of many genres, and there was no cut of beef he could not cook perfectly. However, the outdoors brought Herb the most joy. He loved weekly hikes with his men’s group, the Highland Explorers – the longer and more strenuous hike, the better. He also pursued golfing, biking, and skiing enthusiastically.

Ann Marie was the creative, Herb was the doer and together they successfully completed multiple renovation projects throughout their partnership. Herb and his daughter Torie loved hiking together and cooking together. As a family, preparing for and celebrating the holidays were among their most treasured times.

Herb’s greatest achievement, though, was the person he was – solid, resourceful, non-judgmental, and compassionate. He was a supportive husband and father. He could always be counted on to help a friend. His leadership was quiet, his hand steady, his manner egoless, and his value system solid to the core.

He is survived by his partner and wife of 45 years, Ann Marie Koshuta, his daughter, Victoria Faling (Denver), his brother, Jeff Faling (Lincoln and Tucson), and his sister, Jan Faling (Denver). He is predeceased by his sister, Jo Morgan (Denver).

His strength, guidance, wisdom, and love will be missed greatly by his wife and daughter – and all those he touched.

Even in his passing, Herb has contributed to research of his diagnosis, Cruetzfeldt-Jakob Disease, a rare and aggressive neurological disease that has no cure. Please consider making a donation in Herb’s memory to The National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center at Case Western Reserve University (select CJD research). The family is planning a celebration of life and details will be shared.
