George Vargas, a longtime resident of White Sands New Mexico, and originally from Taos, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025, at the age of 70.
Born on September 6, 1954, George was a proud 1973 graduate of Taos High School. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, where he served honorably for five years. During his military service, George married his high school sweetheart Christine (Martinez), also of Taos, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love and dedication.
Following his military service, George continued his commitment to the government, retiring after 22 years with the Department of Defense. He was respected for his work ethic, professionalism, loyalty, and the many friendships he built over the decades.
George had a love for western novels, a good laugh, good food, playing BINGO and the thrill of a slot machine at his local VFW. He was a master storyteller, quick with a joke, and someone who never met a stranger. He had a love of baking and became a master baker of biscochitos. His presence lit up every room, and he leaves behind countless memories of warmth and laughter.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Christine; his father Abelino Vargas; stepfather Raul Miera Sr.; mother Rebecca Miera; brother and sister-in-law Henry and Lucy Grant; brother-in-law and sister Andy and Joann Sandoval; sister Delia Vargas Hughes; sister-in-law Pasty Vargas; in-laws Pablo and Madalena Martinez; brothers-in-law Robert (Bobby) Benavidez and David Vigil; son-in-law JP Vuiller; and several nieces and nephews.
George is survived by his daughters, lovingly known as the Vargas Girls-Pamela, Amanda, Georgia, and Selena, and his grandchildren Trent, Breanna, Christopher, and Makenzie. He is also survived by his siblings Raul Miera Jr. (Norma), Lawrence Vargas, David Vargas (Judy), Samuel DeVargas, Abby Martinez, and Lupita Miera. In-laws Charlene Benavidez, Cathy Vigil, Joe Martinez, Lawrence Martinez, Carmela Martinez (Ben), Adrian Martinez (Pacifica), along with many cherished aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.
George will be remembered as a devoted family man, a proud Marine, and a friend to all. His legacy of love, laughter and service will on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00AM on July 29, 2025, at San Francisco de Asis Church in Taos, NM. Burial with military honors will follow at a later date at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
