In grief and with deep gratitude for a life richly lived we are so sad to announce that Gary DeFrancesco died on August 11, 2026. He passed peacefully at home with his family after living with cancer for nearly three years.
Gary was born in New York City, in Manhattan, on October 9, 1954. Throughout his 71 years, he radiated enthusiasm and potential, always encouraging his loved ones and friends to challenge themselves and explore new possibilities. He exemplified this outlook throughout his life, taking on new and unexpected challenges and creating opportunities to grow and learn.
For more than 50 years, Gary was a gifted educator, grant writer and program developer, with a brilliant ability to envision and implement creative approaches to improving education, and children’s lives, building collaborations with school districts, not-for-profits and corporations around the country.
He was beloved for his curiosity, interest in meeting new people, and open-mindedness. He loved travelling and meeting new people, who were never just new acquaintances but friends to whom he would remain connected for the rest of his life. His heart was in Rome, Italy, where he was fortunate to be able to live and spend much time over the past decade and a half. He also loved music and live theater.
His greatest joy was his children, Gabriella and Olivia, with whom he shared every adventure, and who radiate his enthusiasm for the world. He is survived by them and his wife of nearly 30 years, Hillary.
His ability to connect to others mattered deeply to him. His own light may be dimmed, but it will continue to burn bright in those he touched.
