Frank J. Schmitt, 79, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2026, following a stroke. Known and cherished by all who loved him as “Frankie,” he was a kind-hearted man with a quick smile and a soul full of music.
Born on Monday, July 22, 1946, in Santa Fe, NM, Frank was the son of the late William and Katherine Schmitt. He now joins his beloved brother, Bill Schmitt, and his sister, Rosemarie Ortiz, in eternal rest.
Frank is survived by his only daughter, Melanie Peña, and his four cherished grandchildren: Taylor Rose (Delamarter), Justin, Christian, and Emelia Peña. He is also survived by his sister, Melba Rutledge (whose husband Bob is deceased), and his brother, Dave Schmitt (wife Arlene).
A gifted and passionate musician, Frank was an exceptionally talented guitar player who performed with various bands throughout New Mexico over the decades. To those who knew him, a guitar was never far from his hands. His love for music was matched only by his deep sense of duty and patriotism. Frank proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in January 1966. He later served his community as a Deputy Sheriff with the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department.
In addition to his musical and professional talents, Frank was a remarkable jack of all trades who could fix, build, or modify just about anything—from guitars to cars. Ask anyone who knew him from the Candyman, and they’ll tell you there wasn’t anything he couldn’t repair or a person he couldn’t mentor.
A private family viewing will be held. A Rosary and Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (1301 Osage Ave., Santa Fe) on Thursday, April 16, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by interment at Rosario Cemetery (499 N. Guadalupe St., Santa Fe) at 1:00 p.m. Frank will be laid to rest alongside his mother, father, and brother.
