Music was the very heartbeat of his soul, infusing joy into gatherings and lingering in the memories of those he played for.
With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we gather to remember Ernie Dalton, whose life began on June 1, 1948, and was unexpectedly drawn to a close on June 20, 2026, in Pecos, New Mexico. Though his passing was sudden, the legacy Ernie leaves behind is profound, threaded through the lives he touched and the crafts he mastered.
Born to Henry Dalton and Ruby Sandoval Dalton, Ernie’s roots were deeply intertwined with the community he loved. His education was laid upon the solid foundations of Pecos High School, from which he graduated in 1966, and furthered at Santa Fe Community College. His dedication to learning was a lifelong passion, one of many qualities that made him well spoken and deeply respected by all who knew him.
Ernie’s life was a testament to hard work and artistry. As a lifelong carpenter, he devoted himself to Ernie’s Woodworks, earning a reputation for both skillful hands and an imaginative mind. His woodworking was not simply a vocation—it was an art form, and countless creations bear the mark of his care. Equally well-known for his musical talents, Ernie was a gifted guitarist whose melodies delighted friends, family, and the wider Pecos community. Music was the very heartbeat of his soul, infusing joy into gatherings and lingering in the memories of those he played for.
Family was at the center of Ernie’s world, and among his proudest accomplishments was being a devoted father and grandfather. He is lovingly survived by his daughter, Jamie Dalton Vigil, and grandsons Derik Sena and Joey Chavez, and granddaughters Desiree Sena, Arrayah Varela, and Jaelynn Chavez. His legacy continues in his great-grandson Rio Romero and great-granddaughter Delylah Sena. His presence lives on in his brothers Gilbert Dalton and Joseph Dalton, his sisters-in-law Juanita Dalton and Teresa Dalton, and dear ones such as Laura Varela. A chorus of friends and extended family throughout Pecos, NM, also grieve his loss and celebrate his life.
Ernie’s life was filled with simple joys: playing guitar, telling stories to his grandchildren and friends, and leisurely cruising through Pecos.
He is now reunited with his beloved daughter Erica Dalton, son-in-law Raymond Varela, and his cherished parents, Henry and Ruby Sandoval Dalton, whose memory Ernie held dear throughout his days.
Described by all as humorous, loving, and generous, Ernie’s spirit was infectious. Hard working by nature, and always eager to lend a helping hand, he was a man whose wisdom was matched only by his kindness. He was educated and well spoken, yet humble and approachable—a friend to many in every sense.
Ernie’s life was filled with simple joys: playing guitar, telling stories to his grandchildren and friends, and leisurely cruising through Pecos, occasionally—and fondly—causing a traffic jam. He delighted in fishing and the tranquil embrace of sitting by the river, and spent countless hours in his woodworking shop doing what he loved most. Time with family and close friends was precious to him, and he was happiest in their company.
A fixture in the community, Ernie’s presence was larger than life, yet his absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. His legacy endures in every song that echoes, each crafted piece of wood that stands sturdy, and in the laughter and tales shared by those who knew and loved him.
