Emilio Abeyta, a devoted family man, honored Vietnam veteran, and respected community member, passed away peacefully at his home on April 26, 2026. Born in Taos on July 28, 1940, Emilio lived a life marked by dedication, hard work, and love for those around him.
Emilio began his career working for the Moly Corp mine, where he exemplified a strong work ethic and commitment. His passion for service extended to his role as a firefighter with the United States Forest Service, where he served as a crew leader, demonstrating leadership, courage, and an unwavering dedication to protecting the land and its people. Emilio was immensely proud of his military service during the Vietnam War and carried a deep pride in being an American throughout his life.
Family was the cornerstone of Emilio’s life. He cherished his wife of 58 years, Margie V. Abeyta, with whom he traveled extensively across the United States to visit family. A loving and good father, Emilio’s home was often filled with joy and laughter as he loved to entertain friends and family alike. His grandchildren brought great happiness to his life, and he took immense pride in watching his family grow and thrive. Emilio's kindness, generosity, and warm spirit earned him many friends who admired and respected him.
A man of varied interests, Emilio enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Denver Broncos football team and the UNM Lobos basketball team. He also had a fondness for the excitement of casinos, which added a spark of adventure to his leisure time.
Emilio's pride in his family and his military service were among his greatest accomplishments. He was deeply rooted in his heritage and values, guiding his loved ones with strength and tenderness throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife Margie V. Abeyta; his children Joseph Abeyta (Yolanda), Anthony Abeyta, Paul Abeyta (Melanie), Henrietta Abeyta, and Carlitos Emilio Abeyta, whom he lovingly considered his son; grandchildren Tanya Abeyta (Rachel), Joe Anthony Abeyta (Amanda), Daniella Abeyta, Anthony Daniel Abeyta (JoAnn), Alicia Abeyta, Greg Abeyta, and Angelica Abeyta; and his brother Eddie Abeyta (Anna). Emilio also leaves behind numerous extended family members and many dear friends who will continue to cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Olmedo Abeyta and Rafaelita Sisneros; his son Emilio Abeyta Jr.; great-grandson Adonis Abeyta; daughter-in-law Renee Tafoya; and his siblings Rosella Romero (Narcisso), Emma Tafoya (Pilingo), Mary Medina (Juan), Ernestina Mondragon (Climaco), Sophie Tafoya (Max), Margie Velasquez (Erlindo), Olmedo Abeyta (Cruz), and Isabel Archuleta (Joe).
The family will gather to honor Emilio’s life beginning with a Rosary on May 5, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Rivera Family Funerals & Cremations of Taos, located at 818 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, Taos, NM. A Memorial Service will follow on May 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the same location. The burial will take place afterward at Angel Fire State Veteran Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. at 31 Onate Rd, Angel Fire, NM.
Emilio Abeyta’s legacy of love, service, and dedication to family and country will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. His memory is a blessing that will endure through generations.
