Duane Paul Hopper

Duane Paul Hopper, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed from this world on August 19, 2025, in the picturesque town of Taos, New Mexico, at the age of 77. Born on May 19, 1948, in Wichita, Kansas, Duane was raised in Dodge City, Kansas. He would later jokingly use a popular phrase "I got the hell out of Dodge." Duane's life journey began in the heart of America but took him on adventures that would shape his identity and his legacy. He was a devoted, loving, and supportive father to Dawn, Daphne, Dylan, and David. 

A proud veteran, Duane served in the Army and bravely faced the trials of Vietnam as a tunnel rat, an experience that exemplified not only his courage but also his unwavering commitment to his country. Following his military service, Duane's path led him to the enchanting landscapes of Taos, where a brief stop en route to California turned into a lifetime commitment to this vibrant community.

In Taos, Duane's career flourished as he initially worked with a casting company before embarking on an entrepreneurial journey. He founded his own Indian jewelry business, where for 34 years, he showcased his talents as a silversmith, creating stunning pieces that reflected both his artistry, and the artistry of other silversmith workers, and relatives from the Taos Pueblo who also created the jewelry and accessories that he sold. His shop also served as a gallery that showcased several forms of Native American art.

Duane's personal life was filled with warmth and love. He met Rhoda in Taos, cementing a partnership that would bring forth a loving family. He took immense pride in being a grandfather to nine beautiful grandchildren: Adakai, Axen, Caden, Shanti, Joaquin, Antonio, Connor, Courtney, and Clara, with whom he cherished unforgettable moments and adventures. The holidays were especially dear to him; he adored Christmas and all family gatherings, fostering a spirit of unity and celebration within his family.

A lover of nature, Duane found solace in the beauty of flowers, particularly Cosmos. His interests extended beyond flora; he was captivated by old western movies and delighted in lake fishing at Hopewell Lake, which held numerous fond memories for him. A borderline fanatic of the Denver Broncos, he proudly upheld his loyalty to the team, adding to the tapestry of friendships he cultivated throughout his life. With a remarkable gift for conversation, Duane connected with people from all walks of life, proving that friendship knows no bounds of wealth or status. Many knew him not just as a friend but as a confidant and a source of inspiration.

Duane’s memory will forever echo in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him, including his good friends, the late Bob Watkins and his wife Sandy who resides in Hawaii, who shared in his adventures and laughter. His life was a testament to the joys of connection, the beauty of creativity, and the importance of family. As we reflect on the life of Duane Paul Hopper, we are reminded to embrace the moments that matter, celebrate our loved ones, and cherish the rich fabric of friendship that he exemplified so beautifully. Though he has departed from this earthly realm, his spirit and the impact he had on those around him will endure, leaving an indelible mark on the lives he touched.

A memorial service will be held September 13, 2025 at 11AM at Rivera Chapel.
