Listen to Obituary

Drew Michael Johnson (12/1/77) died suddenly and unexpectedly on October 9, 2025. Drew was 47 and so excited about life. He was selfless and smart- the smartest person we knew- a true renaissance man. Many of his skills were learned from his father, Samuel I. Johnson, who precedes Drew in death, and stepfather Terry Morton, who survives Drew, along with Drew’s mother Nena Morton, his big brother Joseph Johnson, niece Emily, big sister Becky and her husband Chris, nephew Josh Walton, best friends Peter and Chris Ortega, and life partner Zoe VanGunten, whose family adored Drew to his very core. Drew was an animal lover and cared deeply for his animals, tirelessly treating them to the best lives possible. He is survived by Shy and Zak, who miss him so very much. Drew worked as Medical Unit Manager for CYFD for the State of New Mexico, where the people he worked with cherished his wit and diligence and ability to problem-solve along with his willingness to help, smiling all the way. And what a smile. Anyone who met Drew took immediate notice of his striking green eyes, captivated at once by the good will and purity of spirit that shone there. An informal memorial gathering will take place on Thursday, October 23 from 3-6 pm at Rivera Funeral Home on Rodeo Road in Santa Fe. Come and go as you please. In lieu of flowers please send donations to South Central Bloodhound Rescue online or 2300 S. Westgate Dr., Weslaco, TX 78596.
