Domitilia Tillie Rivera, a beloved matriarch and spirited entrepreneur, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025, at the age of 98, surrounded by her loving family in Santa Fe. Born on May 22, 1927, in San Jose, Tillie's life was a tapestry woven with strength, love, and a zest for joy that lit up the lives of all who knew her.
A true pioneer in her community, Tillie owned a bar and grocery store where her children were not just helpers, but the heart of her business. Her flair for entrepreneurship also led her to assist in opening the Senior Citizens Center in Ribera, NM, where she nurtured a spirit of togetherness among her peers. She took pride in owning a transportation service, shuttling eager patrons to Sandia and Isleta Casino, where she herself found joy every Wednesday in the thrill of the game, a passion that began in her childhood when she won her first jackpot at the tender age of eight during the Great Depression.
Tillie was not only renowned for her business acumen but also for her vibrant personality. Her smile could illuminate the darkest corners of any room, and the warmth of her striking blue eyes radiated kindness and friendship. A devoted Catholic, she was actively involved in her church choir, filling places of worship with her melodious voice. Even in her final days, as she serenaded her daughter-in-law Minnie with a heartfelt rendition of "Happy Birthday," her spirit remained unyielded to the inevitable passage of time.
The importance of education resonated deeply within her. At a stage when most might rest, Tillie sought to enrich her mind and heart, earning her GED in her 60s as a testament to her belief that learning is a lifelong journey. She often urged those around her to embrace education, demonstrating the very values she held dear throughout her life.
Tillie's culinary talents delighted many, although she had an aversion to onions and garlic, which became a quirky part of her charm. Known for her hearty dishes, she poured love into every meal, ensuring that her family felt nourished and cherished. A heart of gold, she extended her care beyond her family, welcoming all with open arms as she enriched the lives of those fortunate enough to cross her path.
Domitilia Tillie Rivera is survived by her loving children: Pete, Frances (Arthur), Andy (Julia), Mark (Lorella), Richard (Angelica); a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Minnie; son-in-law Simon; and her sister Alice. Her legacy continues in the hearts of many who loved her dearly.
She joins her late husband Indalecio, her children Eddie, Danny, (Genova) Celina, Mike (Dolores), and her parents Nicolas and Vivinita, along with cherished grandchildren John, Brian, Jessica, Norma, Melanie, Fabian, and her daughter-in-law Margaret, as well as her special friend Paul Chavez, enveloped in the eternal embrace of love in God's arms.
A Rosary will be held at San Miguel del Vado Church in Ribera, NM on December 1, 2025, at 10:00 AM, followed by a Mass at 11:30 AM. In the hearts of all she touched, Tillie's spirit lives on—undaunted, unwavering, and ever vibrant.
