Corrine M Gutierrez

1931 — 2025

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness – We announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great grandmother Corrine M. Gutierrez, who entered the gates of heaven and into the loving arms of Jesus on May 16, 2025, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Corrine was born in Mora County - the small village of Monte Aplanado, New Mexico to Celia Bernal and Frank Martinez; Paternal Grandparents who raised her Reyitos and Adolfo Bernal, all Deceased. She attended and graduated from the parochial schools taught by Nuns in the Catholic faith.

She was married to Nicholas Lopez who proposed to her at the Plaza Park Gazebo in Las Vegas, NM. Their marriage blessed them with three daughters, Nora Lopez (Vialpando), Yolanda Mary Lopez (Gallegos) dec’d, Ida Lopez (Gallegos). Corrine had a kind friendship with Dad’s first kids Joseph F Lopez dec’d, and Beatrice D Lopez LaBlanche dec’d; they were loved and regarded as family.

Corrine’s marriage at a young age to Mr. Lopez allowed her to travel to many places such as, Butte Montana, where she was hostess and landlady and part owner of the Pony Express Cafe, the Nevada Copper Mines, Spokane Washington Christian fellowship, the copper mines in Darwin, California amongst other cities along California. While living in Redondo Beach, Corrine, became a mom for the third time, and decided that she longed for the comfort of family in New Mexico.

As time went on Corrine worked with her sister Frances Eckhardt, Dec’d, at a few popular restaurants in Santa Fe, the Plaza was one where she met her future husband named Vicente Gutierrez, Dec’d. In time Corrine and Vicente became more than friends and were married at St. Anne Parish in Santa Fe, where they often attended church.

Corrine and Vicente spent numerous holidays and joyous occasions visiting their daughters, making visits to the horse and dog racetracks at the Downs in Santa Fe, the Race Track in Raton, NM and their favorite in Juarez, Mexico.

After attending a Doug Batchelor Bible Teaching Lecture with family, Corrine began her Christian walk with Jesus. She became active with the Christian Faith leading her to being baptized at the same time as her daughter, Nora and granddaughter Melony. The one living hope Corrine had was for all her family to have a relationship with the Lord and be baptized; her encouraging words were to pray and be a good person.

In the early years of Corrine’s life she was called Cora, over time and with life’s experiences Cora became Corrine, it has been said she was an intelligent, vibrant woman with strong convictions and a colorful character. She made friends in every job that she held and each place where she got her weekly massage and picked up her healthy food. Mom would get a bite to eat and purchase her vegetables at the La Montanita Co-op and have her smoothies made while she waited.

At different times Corrine could be seen visiting her favorite jewelry stores, shopping or walking in the mall, for exercise or spending time watching her favorite tv programs on Christian television stations as she meditated on a selected scripture. She made phone calls and asked for prayer with numerous Christian Evangelists’, made monetary contributions and purchased books for family and friends.

Corrine also spent her retirement years watering her garden and many flowers. She enjoyed feeding and caring for a stray Retriever she called Brandon who had red hair similar to her hair coloring. Corrine was a special kind of grandma that showed love and kindness to her grandchildren, bringing them fruit, cookies and other goodies from the Natural Grocers. As a mom she always did her utmost in supporting her three daughters with whatever was asked for or needed.

Many times she attended her grandsons’ football games in the brisk weather, covering her legs with a blanket, sipping hot coffee from a thermos and faithfully attending her grandchildren’s weddings, graduations, birthdays and family get-togethers. She gave words of wisdom, prepared delicious red chili, tasty little tortillas, and her secrets to making delicious foods.

Corrine was called “Cookie” affectionately referred to as the baker and cook at the Highway Department Coffee Shop. Shortly after her experience preparing food, she found that being useful in the mapping section was more her forte and proved to be a great position, at the New Mexico Highway Department, locating specialty maps for areas throughout the state, ensuring they were properly filed after making copies, and more. Her expertise and cordial manner was deeply appreciated, receiving lapel pins for meritorious deeds for each five, ten, fifteen, and twenty-five years of faithful service, allowing her to retire happily.

Corrine maintained friendships with many co-workers, neighbors, people she met in church, persons she would talk to on her shopping trips or outings, no one was beneath her she treated them with reverence, often giving a bracelet or momento of her generosity.

When driving from Tesuque became too much of a chore Corrine moved to Santa Fe to be closer to shops, malls, doctor’s offices and everything she needed to make life easier.

Being a fun person, Corrine found humor in everyday life; play on words she pronounced pizza as pit zah, she laughed at silly jokes, she took joy watching a grand child’s funny actions and the fun Corrine and Vicente shared playing jokes on one another.
