The family of Christopher (Chris) Gallegos will celebrate his life and patriotism to country with a service at noon, April 16. The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish will host the service. His family will host a small reception prior to the funeral at 10:30 a.m., at the Betty Ehart Senior Center, 1001 Bathtub Row.

The burial with full military honors will take place following the service at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Chris was born on July 17, 1949 and left this Earth far too soon Feb. 21, 2026, after a brief bout with pneumonia.

Chris was born in Santa Fe at Christus St. Vincent to John and Louise Gallegos. A life-long resident of Los Alamos, he graduated from Los Alamos High School in June 1969. He joined the Navy shortly after and attended boot camp in San Diego, California. He then served in Vietnam where he received the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Bronze Star.

After an honorable discharge Chris began his career with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). He worked his way through several areas and found himself at TA-55 where he remained for the duration of his time.

In March 1976 Chris joined the Los Alamos Fire Department, where he advanced to Driver/Operator/EMT. He worked for Station 5 and 1, serving as a firefighter for 13 years. He also continued working at LANL on his days off from the Fire Department. Chris left the Fire Department in September 1989 and continued his career with LANL, until he retired in July 2015.

Chris had a passion for the outdoors for hunting, fishing and hiking. He held many fond memories of trips to Colorado with his brothers, nephews and nieces. He was always his happiest in nature.

Chris was staff member of the local senior centers up until the day he entered the hospital. The Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization held a memorial for him in March for staff and members.

Chris is survived by his wife, Susan Gallegos, son Jason Gallegos and daughter Melissa Gallegos. He was the eldest of seven children including brothers: Juan (John) Gallegos, Steve Gallegos, Kenny Gallegos, Robert Gallegos and sisters: Kathleen (Kathy) Gallegos and Caroline Lescenski.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
