Listen to Obituary

Bonifacio Montano, a lifelong son of Santa Fe, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2026, at his Santa Fe home, surrounded by the love and light of his family. He was born on December 15, 1935, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and throughout his life became a deeply familiar and respected presence in the community he called home.

Bonifacio built a life marked by devotion, hard work, humor, and heart. In 1969, he started his business in Santa Fe and went on to own Bonifacio Montano Lath and Plaster. His business stood as one of his proudest accomplishments, alongside the family he cherished above all else. He was very loyal and deeply dedicated, a man who worked to create not only a livelihood, but a lasting foundation for those he loved. In a gesture that reflected his generosity and care, he gifted his children homes so they could grow and expand their own families and begin their lives with strength and stability.

He was strong in faith, and that steady spirit carried through every part of his life. Bonifacio was full of jokes and laughter, with a gentle and caring heart that drew people toward him. Happiness seemed to follow him. He was well known in Santa Fe, where he earned the respect and affection of many through his warmth, his character, and the joy he brought into a room. He loved making people laugh, telling jokes, and sharing the kind of easy companionship that leaves a lasting impression.

Bonifacio found joy in the things that made life feel alive and full. He loved riding his horses, taking rides on his Harley Davidson and feeling the wind blow, and spending time at the casino. He enjoyed Mariachi and Spanish music, especially the music of Vicente Fernandez. Some of his happiest moments were spent playing with his grandchildren, who were his favorite treasures. His doggies were his favorite cuddle buddies, always staying close to him and bringing him comfort.

Above all, Bonifacio was a family man. He is survived by his children, Johnny Montano, Dolores Montano-Pena, Ferbie Montano and his wife Kathleen, and Theresa Montano and her husband Fred. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Phillip Montano, Genevieve Valencia, Amanda Montano, Ferbie Montano, Jr., Ben Gomez, Jade Montano, Rayes Montano, and Pablo Montano. His memory will continue through his great-grandchildren Dominic Luna, Liza Luna, Brandon Montano, Serenity Valencia, Bonnie Montano, Grace Montano, Reyna Gomez, Rebecca Gomez, Nora and Luke Montano, Calvin Montano, and Nova Montano. He is also survived by his sister, Theresa Gonzales. Each of them carries forward the laughter, loyalty, and love that defined his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Reyes Montano. Their bond remains part of the story of a life centered on love, family, and enduring commitment.

Bonifacio Montano will be deeply missed not only by his family, but by the town and people of Santa Fe. His life was one of faith, humor, generosity, and steadfast love. He leaves behind a legacy built by his hands, strengthened by his spirit, and carried on in the family who meant everything to him.
