Benjamin Joseph Huerta, 39, beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, passed away on Friday August 7, 2026. Benjamin was born in Española, New Mexico, to David Huerta and Mary Esther Lucero. He had a passion for movies, hunting, sports, and, above all, family. He attended Northern New Mexico Community College and began his early career at the local nursing home bringing joy to the residents by serving good, warm meals; always with a smile. He built a dedicated career at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), as a Research Technician and proudly served for fourteen years. During his time at LANL, he received several awards and maintained an exemplary attendance record.From childhood Benjamin and his twin sister were inseparable companions. Along with his family, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He cherished time with his grandparents in Chimayó and Bayard, New Mexico, especially their homemade meals, often prepared especially for him. He grew up surrounded by the unconditional love of his aunts and uncles and many cousins.In high school, he served as the manager of the Pojoaque Elks basketball team and effortlessly outshone the athletes in popularity. Everyone knew Ben.Benjamin was a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews and great nephew. He rarely missed their sporting events, birthday celebrations, archery competitions, hunting and fishing trips, or the many other activities they shared together. He was also an amazing chess player, bowler, and a master of the card table who thoroughly enjoyed a friendly challenge-beating any willing opponent.Above all, Benjamin adored his father. His truest friend. Two peas in a pod who navigated life side-by-side and shared a rare bond. Wherever his father went Benjamin was close by.Benjamin is preceded in death by his father, David Huerta; grandparents Percy and Josie Lujan, Efren and Mary Huerta; brother Orlando Lucero; aunt Mary Rose Montalvo; uncles Junior and Eddie Huerta; and cousin Christopher Montalvo.He is survived by his mother, Mary Esther Lucero (Tommy); sisters Valerie Huerta, Theresa Toomey (Jack) and Victoria Lucero; brothers Diego Lucero, and Carlos Lucero (Margaret); and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and a great-nephew.Benjamin was a gentle soul and a kind spirit, with a smile that could warm your heart. He leaves behind cherished memories with all who knew him.Memorial Service will take place at Rivera Funeral Home in Espanola on Thursday August 27th at 5:30 pm with the Rosary to follow at 6:00pm. Funeral mass will be held on August 28, 2026 at 10:30am at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
