Angela Marie Atencio, 80, passed away peacefully in her sleep after being cared for and loved deeply through illness by her closest family. Angela was a cherished mother, grandmother and friend. She dedicated her life to being a “domestic engineer”, tending to her family, home, and the endless flow of hungry hummingbirds that visited her porch each summer. She was endlessly proud of her children and the life she created in Cebolla, New Mexico with her beloved husband of 52 years, Joe Ray Atencio.
Angela, born in Santa Fe, New Mexico to Florencio Garcia and Teodorita (Teddy) Silva embodied the tenacity and kindness of northern New Mexico natives. She openly welcomed local friends and family into her home, creating a space of warmth, generous hospitality and enjoyment of homemade tortillas, carrot cake, natillas , and other comforting treats. She and her husband passed on a “value system which emphasizes responsibility to self and fellow man.” Through health and life challenges Angela always persevered, voicing her opinion and demanding action for what she thought was best for herself and those around her. In her later years Angela even became known as an advocate for residents of her living facility, urging management to act upon fire safety and food concerns with zero hesitancy.
Angela’s spunky sense of humor and gentle teasing brought laughter and lightheartedness to those around her, even in difficult situations. Angela emphasized an appreciation of the softer and slower parts of life, reflected in the beautiful and carefully crafted afghans and baptismal bibs she would create for those dear to her.
Throughout her life, Angela found strength and peace in prayer, and her unwavering faith remains an enduring part of her legacy.
Angela is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Ray Atencio, her daughter, Maria Raquel Wilson (husband Gary), her father Florencio Garcia, her mother Teodorita (Teddy) Garcia and her sister Shirley Present. She is survived by her sons Jose Andres Atencio (wife Alicia Leger), Marcos Atencio (wife Monica Atencio), Jose Ramon Atencio, Jose Adan Atencio, her daughter Aminah Avalos, her brother Alonso Garcia (wife Rosemary Garcia), her grandsons (Isaiah, Issac and Jordan) and her great grand daughter Catalina Avalos.
