With profound sadness and immeasurable love, we announce the passing of Alvin Lee Thomas, who peacefully departed this life on July 23, 2026, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the age of 87.

Born on May 17, 1939, in Lillybrook, West Virginia, Alvin was the son of David and Ruth (Ingole) Thomas. His life's journey led him from the hills of West Virginia to New Mexico, where he built a remarkable legacy as an educator, musician, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Alvin graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, West Virginia, in 1957 before moving to Las Vegas, New Mexico. It was there that he met the love of his life, Kay, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span 65 years of marriage. Together they built a family rooted in love, faith, and unwavering devotion.

A proud graduate of New Mexico Highlands University, Alvin earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music in 1964 while also playing football for the university. He later received his Master of Arts in Music in 1967. His passion for music naturally led him into education, where he dedicated 25 years to Santa Fe Public Schools, inspiring generations of students through music, encouragement, and compassion. Countless students were forever impacted by his patience, kindness, and love of teaching.

Music was never simply a profession—it was the language of Alvin's heart. Throughout his life, he performed with several bands in the Santa Fe area, sharing his love of music with audiences of all ages. In retirement, he continued bringing joy to others by performing at the Santa Fe Senior Center and numerous retirement communities. Whether on a stage, in a classroom, or gathered with family, Alvin believed music had a unique way of bringing people together.

Above all else, Alvin's greatest joy was his family. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with those he loved and especially treasured following his great-grandsons to basketball games across New Mexico. Rarely missing a game, he could almost always be found in the stands, proudly cheering them on. His greatest legacy was not only in the students he taught or the music he played, but in the love he gave so freely to his family and friends. His gentle spirit, warm smile, kind heart, and quiet strength will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, David and Ruth (Ingole) Thomas; his beloved son, Lawrence "Dee" Thomas; his brother, Pat Thomas; and his father- and mother-in-law, Ernest and Pita Apodaca.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Kay Thomas; his siblings, David (Remona) Thomas, RuthAnn (William) Payne, and Ronnie Thomas; his brothers-in-law, Mariano (Mickey) Apodaca and Francisco (Margaret) Apodaca; his children, Randy (Susan) Thomas, Candy Thomas, Ernie (Wanda) Thomas, and Angelique (Sherman) Peterson; his cherished grandchildren, Tiffany (Victor), Gwenyth, Bevan, Lawren (Sebastian), DJ (Angel), Brianna, Tory, Delfin, Shelby, and Iris; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Abygail (Santiago), Troy, Kaleb, Donald, Jacob, Felix, Sophia, Sienna, and Claire, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, lifelong friends, former students, fellow musicians, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Alvin's granddaughter, Lawren, and her husband, Sebastian, for the extraordinary love, compassion, and selfless care they provided during the final chapter of his life. Their unwavering devotion allowed him to spend his final days surrounded by dignity, comfort, and the love of family. Their kindness will forever remain a cherished blessing to all who loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Kiva Chapel of Light at Rivera Family Funerals & Cremations of Santa Fe, 417 Rodeo Road, Santa Fe, NM 87505. A reception will immediately follow. Interment will take place at a later date in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that Alvin's song lives on in every life he touched. Through the lessons he taught, the music he shared, and the love he so generously gave, his legacy will continue for generations. Though the music has quieted, the melody of Alvin's life will forever play in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
