Alexander Tafoya, known affectionately as "Alex," passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Born on September 16, 1959, in Leadville, Colorado, Alexander lived a life marked by dedication, generosity, and an unwavering connection to nature and family.

From an early age, Alex demonstrated a profound commitment to his chosen career path. Beginning his journey as an IT Specialist at just 17 years old, he cultivated a professional reputation grounded in expertise and pride in his work. Most recently, he served diligently for the City and County of Los Alamos, where his dedication and conscientious approach earned him deep respect among colleagues and community members alike. Alex consistently strived to deliver his best, reflecting the strong work ethic instilled in him by his family.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alex was a man of diverse interests and passions. An accomplished guitar player and musical writer, he found joy in sharing his compositions in settings ranging from tranquil parks to lively campfires. His affinity for classic rock music was a constant in his life; he often kept his radio tuned to bands like Tool, Pink Floyd, and the Grateful Dead, whose melodies resonated with him deeply.

Alex’s character was defined by warmth and humor. Known to be kindhearted and generous, he was always ready to lend help to those in need. His playful spirit was infectious—he was a beloved jokester who created amusing nicknames for friends and family, brightening many lives with laughter. While occasionally a bit clumsy—famously prone to mishaps around campfires—his large-hearted nature and love for animals and the outdoors never went unnoticed. His daughters fondly described him as a “Dude’s Dude,” a testament to his down-to-earth personality and unique sense of humor.

A deeply spiritual man, Alex cherished solitude in nature from a young age, often retreating to the mountains for camping excursions that nurtured his soul. He shared these experiences with his father, bonding over deer and elk hunting and fishing—skills and traditions that were passed down through generations. His connection to the land was evident in the care he devoted to his 14-acre property, where he undertook various projects such as building bat houses and creating a pond, always mindful of his environment. Motorcycling was another passion of his, allowing him the freedom to explore regions including parts of Colorado and South Dakota. His love for collecting extended to thrifting for unique items, with a particular fondness for Coca-Cola memorabilia and Native American artwork. A devoted fan of the Miami Dolphins, he affectionately referred to the team as “The Fish!”

Alex’s family was the cornerstone of his existence. He took immense pride and joy in his daughters, Jenna Tafoya and Athina Hinojosa, and his beloved grandson, Aurelius Gonzales. Their happiness and well-being meant the world to him. He remained close to his siblings—Angela Jester, Ernesto Tafoya, Isabelle Bonda, Christine Caudillo, and Julie Aragon (Daniel)—and maintained strong ties with a broader family network including 12 nephews and 6 nieces. His faithful Blue Heeler dog, Dude, was a steadfast companion, embodying the loyalty and affection that characterized Alex’s personal relationships. Additionally, Alex is survived by numerous close family members and cherished friends. His life was also shaped by the memory of his late brother, David Michael Tafoya, and his parents, Jose Alejandro and Maria Celina Tafoya, who held a special place in his heart.

Services for Alex are pending at this time.

Alexander Tafoya leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and humor. His contributions to his profession, his family, and his community stand as a testament to a life well-lived. He will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him—as a loving father and grandfather, a devoted son and brother, a trusted friend, and a man whose spirit was as vibrant as the music he cherished. The family of Mr. Tafoya have entrusted the caring professionals at Rivera Family Funeral Home of Espanola to support them during this time. We offer our heartfelt condolences to all.
